Endermologie – Does It Really Work?

Posted on Friday, October 26th, 2012 by Dr. Babak Dadvand

Endermologie is a non-invasive technique targeted to treat cellulite.  It was originally developed in the 1980’s as a non-surgical method to treat scars in burn victims. These patients began to notice improvements in their cellulite and soon endermologie was considered by the FDA the first cellulite treatment.

Endermologie is a massage machine with two rollers that apply positive pressure to the skin while at the same time uses suction to redistribute skin and smooth dimpling. The benefits of endermologie are increased circulation, relief of muscular pain, reduction of muscle spasms and cellulite.  Endermologie has been extensively studied and approved by the FDA to specifically make the claim that it does reduce cellulite. However, it does not permanently remove cellulite.  Multiple treatments are required, as is a maintenance therapy of 1-2 treatments every 1-3months to maintain the results. At an average of $80-$100 per session the costs can certainly add up.

Interestingly, there has been a benefit in using endermologie in post liposuction patients to decrease post-operative bruising and swelling. Depending on the extent of liposuction most people continue to have some degree of swelling for months. While purely anecdotal, the use of endermologie in the early post-operative stage significantly reduces the time that patients are swollen. Physiologically, the explanation for this is that during endermologie treatments there is an increase in local circulation and lymphatic channels which help in reducing swelling.

I routinely recommend that patients consider endermologie after their liposuction surgery. Not only have I seen my patients have a decrease in their swelling and bruising at a much faster rate, they also tell me that endermologie helps them feel less stiff and more mobile, most likely because of it is similar to deep tissue massage.
