Acne Scars Laser
Dr. Dadvand often sees patients at his Beverly Hills practice that suffer from acne scars, years after their pimples are gone. He developed a treatment protocol that uses the Palomar Icon Laser to flatten scars and diminish their appearance.
For most people, acne largely becomes a distant memory by the time that they have their mid-20’s. Those who are left with acne scars can be divided into three categories:
- ice pick scars: deep pits
- rolling scars: sharp angles and edges
- boxcar scars: wavy lines
There is good news and bad news. The bad news is that, as we age, acne scars can deepen and look more pronounced. This is because our skin becomes less efficient at producing collagen, the protein responsible for maintaining our skin’s elasticity.
The good news, however, is that this condition can be effectively treated. Some of the acne scar treatments you may have heard about:
- Tissue fillers are injected directly into the skin to fill in scars. This is a temporary solution that does not address raised scars.
- Dermabrasion: the top layers of skin are essentially scraped off. Little to no long term effect.
- Chemical peels: acidity is used to burn off the top layers of skin. A series of strong chemical peels may have some positive effect on acne scars.
- Excision: raised scars are surgically removed/scraped, leaving the area with skin that needs to be treated to even the skin tone.
- Lasers: gold standard treatment – see below.
Upon consultation, Dr. Dadvand will discuss which treatment best suits your needs.
Acne Scars Laser Treatment in Los Angeles
Dr. Dadvand tested and used different ablative and non-ablative lasers over the years to clear up acne scars from patients’ skin. The best system in the market nowadays is the Palomar Icon fractional laser. When Dr. Dadvand applies the laser, pulses of light penetrate the top layers of skin and break down scar tissue beneath the surface. The body’s natural healing response stimulates the production of collagen and restores elasticity. Acne scars are broken down at the molecular level and flushed out of the body over the next 2-4 months.
Unlike laser skin resurfacing (ablative lasers), which completely burns off the top layer of skin and requires actual downtime, the Palomar Icon laser is targeting tissues below the surface, so the healing process and accompanying risks inherent to other laser treatments are non-existent. Some light redness and swelling are fairly typical, but the underlying skin will rejuvenate and start regrowing within 4-5 days. Patients experience little to no downtime with these acne scars laser technology.
