Scarless Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is one of the most satisfying procedures for women because it alleviates many of their symptoms immediately. Women who decise to undergo breast reduction surgery are so fed up with the symptoms and interference with activity that they are more than happy to accept the incisions that come with the procedure.

In a previous blog entry I mentioned that the final scars in most breast reduction cases typically resemble an upside down T or an anchor.  Some women are not prepared to accept these incisions and for them there may be another option.

The Scarless Breast Reduction is not completely scarless. A more accurate term would be minimally invasive. In this technique liposuction is performed to reduce the size of the breasts. The benefit of this is that instead of the incisions typical with breast reduction, the patient is limited to just 1 or 2 tiny incisions on each breast which are easily hidden.

There are some limitations to this technique. The main limitation is that there is little to no uplift with this technique. With standard breast reductions, the breasts are also lifted. With liposuction, the volume is diminished but the nipple position basically stays the same.  Also, women with fatty tissue respond much better than those with fibrous breasts because liposuction is more effective with fatty tissue. Finally, women who have good skin tone tend to do better as well because their skin contracts better after the liposuction.

For the right patient, the “Scarless Breast Reduction” is a very good procedure. Of course in order to determine this you would need to be seen in consultation.
