Sagging Breasts

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 380 000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2003 (of which 66,000 were attributed to breast lift procedures, also referred to as “mastopexy”). Since then, the technologies used for breast mastopexy procedures have improved and the number of women seeking solutions for sagging breasts has continued to increase.

Breast lift surgery can be performed on women who are satisfied with the size of their breasts, but wish to achieve a firmer, shapelier appearance. Breast mastopexy can also be combined with breast implants, which can lead to dramatic and aesthetically appealing results.

Breast lift procedures (Mastopexy) for sagging breasts

Once you have found a board-certified cosmetic surgeon for your breast mastopexy, you will need to make an initial appointment to discuss the procedure. During this consultation, the plastic surgeon will do a health check to determine whether you are an ideal candidate for breast lift surgery and he or she will also discuss your expectations.

There are a few different options available for breast mastopexy. A woman who requires a powerful breast lift, for example, may be advised to get an “Inverted-T breast lift” (also known as an “anchor scar”) where a fair amount of excess skin is removed. A woman who only requires a slight lift, on the other hand, may be advised to get a “crescent lift”, where a wedge of skin and breast tissue is removed from above the areola. Besides eliminating the appearance of sagging breasts, you are also able to correct stretched or enlarged areolas as well as fix nipples that point downward.

Each type of breast lift surgery has their own set of advantages, risks and scarring. Before you make any decisions about the type of breast mastopexy for you, make sure you’ve spoken to at least a few doctors to get all the information you need.

Ideal candidates for mastopexy are women older than 18, have a certain degree of elasticity in their skin, is in good health and isn’t pregnant or breastfeeding. Within two to four weeks, the initial swelling will go down, but the shape of your breasts will continue to settle for up to three months.
