What are the risks of mastopexy?
Breast lift procedures (also known as mastopexy) have the ability to enhance your appearance by giving you firmer breasts and removing any sagging in your chest. As with any major surgery, however, there are risks and complications.
Mastopexy risks are increased if you are obese, have diabetes, a family history of heart disease, you live an unhealthy lifestyle (such as excessive drinking or smoking) or you are prone to blood clots. Although the advantages of mastopexy procedures are numerous, no cosmetic surgery is worth risking your life for. When you book a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon, the doctor will do a complete medical check-up to determine what your risks are and if breast-lift surgery would be a good idea for you.
What are the complications of mastopexy?
- Infection. The risks of an infection may seem like a legitimate reason to worry, but recent statistics show that this happens to less than 2% of patients. After the mastopexy procedure, your plastic surgeon will prescribe medication and antibiotics in order to minimize the risks of infection.
- Discomfort. Pain or discomfort from the mastopexy procedure will be experienced during the first two days of recovery. After the first 48 hours, only minor discomfort is generally experienced by patients. Your cosmetic surgeon will advise you to avoid strenuous exercise and work (you will also be given pain medication). Cases where patients had long-term pain are very rare.
- Abnormal scarring. The type of scarring will depend on the type of breast lift surgery you get. Although most cosmetic surgeons take extra care to ensure that scarring is minimized, it can happen that you have a red or raised scar after the procedure. If your skin has an abnormal collagen formation or if you are a smoker, this could increase the risk of irregular scarring after mastopexy surgery.
- Loss of sensation in the nipples. A loss of sensation in the nipples and the skin around the nipples (as well as sensitivity in these areas) is normal during the first few months after a breast lift surgery. In certain cases, a change in nipple sensation can be a permanent complication (but this happens to less than 10% of mastopexy patients).
