4 Factors Involved with Breast Augmentation
-
Size:
The most important aspect of breast augmentation surgery is size. Dr. Dadvand carefully listens to his patients to understand their aesthetic sense. After a careful physical exam Dr. Dadvand discusses which breast implant size range would best suit your breasts and frame. It is important to respect the anatomy and the quality of the breast tissue and skin in order to avoid potential problems.
-
Silicone vs. Saline:
There are currently two types of breast implants available – saline and silicone. While both breast implants have a silicone-based outer shell, they differ in the material that fills them. Saline breast implants are filled with isotonic saline (which is essentially salt water), whereas silicone breast implants are, as the name implies, filled with silicone polymers. The new generation silicone breast implants were FDA approved in 2006 and are different than the older generation silicone breast implants. The older styles were filled with liquid silicone whereas the new generation consists of a highly cross-linked silicone which means it retains it shape. If there is a rupture with the new generation silicone breast implants, they do not leak like the older generation silicone breast implants did. Dr. Dadvand will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both silicone breast implants and saline breast implants during your breast augmentation surgery consultation in order for you to make an informed decision.
-
Above or Below the Muscle:
Breast implants can be placed in one of two pockets, either above the pectoralis muscle (also known as subglandular) or below it (also known as subpectoral). Women with adequate breast tissue may benefit from having the breast implant placed above the muscle. However, for the majority of women, Dr. Dadvand prefers to utilize the dual plane where the breast implant is covered by muscle in the upper part of the breast and breast tissue below.
-
Incision placement:
Areola: This incision is placed on the bottom half of the areola where the darker skin of the areola meets the normal skin. The incision heals very well. This is a very common incision for breast augmentation surgery.
Inframammary: This incision is placed at the base of the breast, in the breast fold. This incision heals very well and is hidden under the breast fold. This is also a common incision for breast augmentation surgery.
Armpit: Also known as transaxillary, an incision is placed in a crease within the armpit. A space is then made under the muscle and the implant is placed. This is not a preferred technique for silicone breast implants.
Bellybutton: Referred to as TUBA (trans-umbilical breast augmentation), an incision is made through the bellybutton. However, the breast implant companies to not recommend this approach because of the potential of damaging the implant shell.
Dr. Dadvand will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each incision during your consultation.
