Mastopexy

Sagging breasts, also known as breast ptosis, can be caused by weight gain and loss, pregnancies and normal aging of the body. Mastopexy (which is commonly known as a “breast lift”) can restore the breasts to give you a youthful, firm appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions about Mastopexy

  • Can I get breast implants and a mastopexy procedure at the same time? Breast augmentation procedures (such as breast implants) and breast lift procedures can often be combined during a single surgery.
  • What is the risk of infection? After the breast lift surgery, you will be prescribed antibiotic medication in order to minimize the risk of infection. Less than two percent of all mastopexy patients get an infection after the procedure.
  • Will I lose sensation in my nipples? Hypersensitivity as well as a loss of sensation in the nipples is normal during the first few weeks. Less than 10% of mastopexy patients experience permanent loss of sensation or hypersensitivity in their nipples.
  • Who is the ideal candidate for mastopexy? The ideal candidate for a breast lift surgery is over 18, not pregnant or breastfeeding and has a certain degree of elasticity in their skin.
  • What is a lollipop incision? This is a vertical mastopexy and it involves a scar that goes around the areola and down to the breast fold.
  • What is the most powerful type of breast lift procedure? The inverted-T breast lift is used on women who require a greater degree of breast lift and have a fair amount of excess skin. Also known as an anchor scar, it consists of a scar that goes around the areola and down the breast as well as a horizontal scar in the breast fold.
  • What about swelling and skin discoloration? Swelling and bruising is normal for the first few weeks after surgery. Mastopexy patients are usually advised to avoid strenuous exercise for the first 3 – 4 weeks, but to start moving around as soon as they are able after the surgery (this will increase blood circulation and help the swelling go down). You will also be advised to avoid alcohol and cigarettes because the toxins contained in these substances can disrupt the healing process.
