Mastopexy and Breast Reduction

Mastopexy is commonly known as a “breast lift” and it can be combined with other types of breast augmentation surgeries, such as a breast lift and a breast reduction. Women with large breasts that have lost their fullness due to age, pregnancy or weight gain and loss may benefit greatly from mastopexy and breast reduction surgery. Not only can these two surgeries often be combined into a single procedure, but it will give your breasts a more youthful, shapelier appearance.

Types of mastopexy

  • Crescent lift: This type of mastopexy removes a crescent-shaped portion of breast tissue and skin above the areola. This breast lift surgery is ideal for a woman who only needs a slight lift and it will result in the nipple being placed in a higher position.
  • Binelli breast lift: Also knows as the circumareolar lift, a benelli lift involves an incision all the way around the areola. A larger, doughnut-shaped incision is made around the initial incision and the skin in between the two incisions is removed. This is a more powerful breast lift than the crescent lift and is ideal for a woman that has more loose skin and sagging breasts. This type of mastopexy should not be used in women who need more than a 2-3cms of nipple lift.
  • Lollipop incision: The amount of scarring involved with this type of mastopexy is larger because it involves a scar that goes around the areola and down to the breast fold. Also known as the vertical breast lift, the lollipop incision provides a more powerful lift than the crescent lift as well as the binelli breast lift and it can reshape the breast tissue more effectively.
  • Inverted-T breast lift: This is the most powerful type of breast lift and it involves an incision that goes around the areola and down the breast as well as a horizontal scar in the breast fold (also known as the “anchor scar”). There is more scarring involved in the inverted-T breast lift, but these scars fade over time and they are generally well hidden underneath the crease of the breast.
