Breast Reduction Surgery (mammaplasty)

The majority of women who are dissatisfied with their breast size want bigger breasts, but the burden of extremely large breasts is much worse than the self-consciousness of only being able to fill an A-cup bra size. These are the top three reasons why large-breasted women resort to breast reduction surgery (also known as mammaplasty):

  • Aesthetic appearance . Although a cleavage looks good, large breasts on a small frame can lead to the woman looking overweight, cause her to slouch and shorten the length of her waist. Naturally large breasts can often look disproportioned and it forces the woman to wear only certain sizes of clothing (that are often too small around the chest and too big around the waist and shoulders).
  • Comfort . Heavy breasts place added stress on your back and neck and many women undergoing breast reduction surgery complain about back and shoulder pain. Although a breast reduction surgery can be sought due to cosmetic reasons (in which case your medical insurance will not pay for the operation), there is a chance that your health insurance will cover the costs of your mammaplasty surgery if you can prove that the size of your breasts is causing health problems.
  • To be more active. Physical activities which are normal for most women, such as lifting weights and running, can be difficult for women with huge breasts. The freedom to take part in sports and other activities is one of the foremost reasons for women with large breasts to undergo a mammaplasty.

During your breast reduction surgery – which usually takes between 2 and 4 hours – the excess breast tissue will be removed.

The breast reduction scarring is more extensive than other breast augmentation surgeries and will depend on the amount of tissue that is removed. You will either have a scar around your areola and down to your breast fold or around your areola, down the breast fold and horizontally across the breast crease. The good news is that this scar will fade in time and the majority of the largest incision (which is the horizontal incision under your breasts) will be hidden by your breast. If you are having an extensive mammaplasty surgery, you may have drains attached to the side of your breasts for the first few days in order to remove excess body fluid from the body.
