Breast implants

If you are looking for facts about breast implants, you have probably come across a myriad of information such as the benefits of silicone and saline implants, incision placement considerations, recovery period and so forth. The internet is a great starting point to get more information about cosmetic surgery, mastopexy, breast implants and breast lift surgery, but be wary of some of the rumors and myths that get posted on cosmetic surgery forums.

Breast implants

These are some of the common myths involving breast implants:

  • I’ll get stretch marks on my breasts: Stretch marks occur when there is a partial tear in the epidermis of your skin. These marks can usually be seen on areas of the body where women tend to gain weight (such as the thighs, stomach and so forth). Although some women may develop a few stretch marks after getting breast implants, this has more to do with their genetic disposition than the breast augmentation surgery itself. In order to minimize the chance of getting stretch marks, use Vitamin E oil and Cocoa Butter to moisturize your skin before surgery.
  • Breast implants will make my breasts droopy: Breast ptosis, or “droopy” breasts, is caused by age, pregnancies, weight gain or loss, not by implants. A large breast will sag just as quickly as a breast with an implant of the same size. Cosmetic surgeons will often advise women with breast implants to continue wearing bras that give adequate support after a breast implant surgery to minimize the risk of sagging.
  • I will lose all feeling in my nipples: While it’s normal to experience a loss of sensation (or hypersensitivity) during the first few months, the feeling in your nipples and skin around the nipples usually return to normal within a few months. Less than 2% of women who undergo breast augmentation surgery permanently lose feeling in their nipples.
  • Saline implants are safer than silicone implants: Silicone implants were approved by the FDA in November 2006 after years of researching, studying and evaluating the safety of these implants. Many cosmetic surgeons in America prefer working with silicone breast implants because they are effective and safe.
