Breast augmentation
Your breast augmentation surgery will generally take approximately two hours to complete and when you wake up, the recovery process begins. You won’t be able to get up and walk out of the clinic immediately after the operation – a nurse will monitor you and you will rest while the effect of the anesthesia subsides.
Some patients feel pain immediately after waking up, but you will be given pain medication. Most women feel a little uncomfortable but few patients experience any extreme pain after a breast augmentation surgery. You can expect your chest to be slightly bruised and swollen for around two weeks after the procedure.
Breast augmentation recovery
The time you will need for breast augmentation recovery usually depend on whether the implants are on top of the muscle or underneath the muscle. If your breast implants are being placed underneath the muscle, it may take a bit longer to fully recover.
Depending on what type of breast augmentation surgery you are getting, you may have drainage tubes on your sides when you wake up. These tubes ensure that excess fluids leave the body and if you are sent home with the tubes inside you, make sure that you are aware of the proper emptying and cleaning procedures.
Here are some breast augmentation recovery tips:
- Avoid aerobic exercise for at least four weeks after the surgery.
- Inform close friends, family and children (people who may expect hugs when they see you) that you have had a breast augmentation and are sensitive in your chest area.
- Make sure you have booked the necessary time off work so that you can recover.
- Try not to bend over and lift heavy things for three weeks.
- Wear comfortable clothing and invest in loose-fitting sports bras (these should be worn while your chest heals).
- Take all the medication your doctor prescribes to avoid infections and reduce pain.
- Try not to put unnecessary pressure on your chest. Make a point of sleeping on your back.
